Hello {{user("firstname")}},

Welcome to the February issue. It seems that using IR imaging for energy conservation and green initiatives is all the rage these days, judging form the number of articles I see on the web. Take a look at the IR News section for more information.

This month we have a story about how Ferro Techniek BV uses thermography in the development of heating elements used in water boilers, coffee machines and other household appliances.

As usual we have our Message board posts, News items, and our monthly Brainteaser for you to solve.

As with all images in this newsletter, click an image to see a larger version.

We'll see you again next month,

Gary Orlove,

Thermal Imaging in Heating Element Development

by Peter Smorscek,
FLIR Systems

Enameling of art objects has been applied in many ancient civilizations. In the 19th century, the ground and finishing enamel process became applicable for industrial applications. Enameled metal is resistant against corrosion, high temperature, acid and alkali.

The company Ferro Techniek BV, based in Gaanderen, the Netherlands, specializes in vitreous enameling of pieces and components. Once only focused on pan supports and burner caps for kitchen stoves, which it still produces for kitchen appliances brands, the company has evolved into further innovative industrial enamel applications. Ferro Techniek now also produces enameled heat exchanger plates which desulphurize emissions of coal fired power plants. These enameled plates considerably extend the power plant heat exchanger’s lifecycle as they are less prone to corrosion. And they contribute to reducing emissions: a distinct product advantage against a background of a stringent global environmental legislation.

The other backbone of the company is a new, more refi ned, yet highly successful application: Ferro Techniek develops and manufactures heater elements for small, high-powered applications: water boilers, coffee machines and other household appliances which need fast and high temperature response...

 ITC Message Board Posts

Here is a selection of recent new threads by IR Community members. Feel free to click the links, see the responses, and post your own response if you like.

  • Chimney Inspections
Has anyone ever used their Infrared Camera to inspect a Brick Chimney?

  • Digital Video Recording Devices??
Does anyone out there know a good hand held digital video recording device that can be used with the BX320? I am having trouble locating one..

  • Roof Thermography
Our firm was contacted to perform an IR diagnosis of a roof on a residential building. The roof is composed of concrete slab, ceramic tiles and on top of that an asphalt membrane. We performed a walk through inspection and saw clear evidence of chronic water ponding (asphalt surface stained) and blistering of areas where the tiles underneath have cracked. Where we are (Panama) it is currently hot and dry and the climate will remain this way for the next 3-4 months. We were thinking of saturating the roof surface with spray rack for a few hours and then performing our IR analysis. The residents in the penthouse apts (underneath the roof) suffer leaks during the rainy season. What would be the best method and times to perform the spray test and imaging? Any suggestions? Thanks,

  • Thermal Imaging rates $$$
I saw the thread on hourly rates and wages of a Thermographer...but wondering what the companies charge the clients as an hourly rate or a daily rate. In the US or Canada. Residential and/or commercial.

  • Temp Sensitivity Paint Or Temp Sensitive stickers
Can anyone please provide advice and where to get temperature sensitive paint or stickers.

And of course if YOU have a question or want to start a discussion on a topic, we would love to hear from you. Just post a new thread on a message board.

Brainteaser of the Month

Here is this month's brainteaser. Readers who email us a correct explanation are entered into a drawing to win a prize. Please put "Brainteaser" as the subject of the message.

Click here to email your guess

Do you have an interesting image that you think would challenge other thermographers? If so please email me your image (preferably in native .img, .jpg, .tif, .tgw, or .tmw format) with an accompanying visible photo and explanation. If your image is used, you receive a gift as well.

Last Month's Brainteaser

Last month's brainteaser is an aerial shot of ducks in a pond.

We had only 3 correct guesses of the 114 guesses I received. Congratulations to our winners Greg Stockton, Chris Cox, and Axel Dougan and to our thermogram contributor, Joe Cobb. They all win the revered ITC low e coffee mug.
